Judy Turpen’s career has incorporated her oral and written communication skills. She has been a public speaker most of her adult life. She has been a spokesperson for a non-profit educational association. Her work experience includes coordination of local. regional and national conferences and workshops. She has written and designed brochures and flyers as well as national press releases.

Judy co-edited the revision and update of, Separate but Equal, a book on God in American history. Her love of the written and spoken word led to owning a bookstore for several years. She believes public speaking is a “taught and caught” art. With training and encouragement anyone can become a speaker or improve their oral communication skills.

In order to become a public speaker one must first: “show up” then “stand up” and finally “speak up” in order to be heard. A speaker’s task is to inform, inspire and ignite others to action. One must know their audience, their venue and what’s expected of them to succeed. A speaker’s obligation is to fulfill, to focus and to leave a footprint. Each speaker has her or his own style and as long as we are true to ourselves and touch our audience we will be asked to speak again. Judy will cover these ethics of public speaking as well as some of the practical points such as a contract, one’s dress and the use of dialogue, delivery and speech preparation.

Judy has been speaking to Christian and other groups for more than 30 years. She retired as managing editor of Teachers of Vision magazine. She is a contributing author to the book, Separate but Equal, that signifies the influence of God in American history. In addition, she authored a booklet on praying for America’s schools.
